Dr. Arun Mathews is a physician executive with over 15 years of experience driving clinical excellence, innovation, and digital transformation in healthcare. As the Chief Medical Officer for South King County at MultiCare Health System in Washington state, Dr. Mathews provides strategic leadership for Auburn and Covington Medical Centers. Under his guidance, both hospitals achieved successful certification surveys in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
In addition to his CMO role, Dr. Mathews has served as the Technology Advisory Services Chief Medical Information Officer for MultiCare, spearheading partnerships and investments in advanced clinical decision support and research tools. His passion for leveraging technology to improve care delivery began during his Medical Informatics Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins, and continued through progressive dual CMO/CMIO roles in Texas. Highlights include leading EMR implementations, achieving HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 designation, and attaining Meaningful Use Stages 1 and 2.
As an educator, Dr. Mathews directed the Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship at Texas Tech from 2010-2015. He has presented at national conferences on topics including clinical analytics, gamification in medical education, and fostering physician innovation.
Dr. Mathews has been recognized with the AMDIS Award for Excellence in Applied Clinical Informatics and as a Rising Star Under 40 by Becker’s Hospital Review. In partnership with the administrative team, MultiCare Auburn Medical Center was named a Most Socially Responsible Hospital by the Lown Institute in 2023.
Dr. Mathews earned his medical degree with honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. A published author, his works include The Hospitalist Manual and A.C.E. Medical Mnemonics flashcards.
